Recently had the chance to visit the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. It’s a great short break from the sticky lowlands of Malaysia. The Cameron Highlands are particularly famous for their rolling green hills covered with tea bushes.
The scene above was taken from the road above the Sungai Palas Tea Plantation. We were lucky enough to be staying at the Copthorne Hotel at Kea Farm, which is a short 2-3 km walk from this particular tea plantation. It was definitely worth the 25 minute walk in the pre-dawn gloom to watch the sunrise over the tea plantation.
Top down view of a butterfly at one of the many butterfly farms which are scattered throughout the region.
A backlit flower along the road back from Sungai Palas Tea Plantation. In one short stretch of road we managed to see passionfruit, eggplants and bananas all growing seemingly wild by the side of the road.
The Sungai Palas Tea Plantation in the golden glow of the morning sun. Makes me wish I’d lugged my telephoto lens there to get some close-up shots of the hills.
Panorama shot of the tea plantation with morning mist dissipating in the valley.
Close-up of a rose at one of the many rose gardens around Brinchang.
A durian stall at Brinchang night market. Known as the King of Fruits, it is common to see it in South East Asia but it is particularly prevalent in Malaysia where it is treated almost like a fine wine. There are many different types (some sweet, some bitter, some creamy) – make sure to tell the vendor which type you like and they will select a breed to suit. If you’ve never tried durian before, give it a go the next time you’re in South East Asia – as one of my friends puts it, it smells kind of funny but tastes like heaven.
Stumbled across this Murtabak stall at Brinchang Night Market and decided this would be dinner. For those who don’t know, murtabak is roti that has been filled with curry (in this case chicken) and vegetables.
I love watching the vendors making the roti bread – it’s like making an Asian pizza.
Murtabaks on the hotplate awaiting buyers.
My murtabak dinner. Delicious. Curry dipping sauce and pink pickles for extra flavour
Chicken grilling over the coal pit at Brinchang Night Market. I was already full by this stage but couldn’t resist the charcoally goodness and so bought myself half a chicken – I wasn’t disappointed!
Multiple containers of Chicken Rice ready for take away. The bright green colour is from pandan which has been used to flavour the rice.
