With all the unseasonably heavy spring rains, a lot of the waterfalls in Victoria are in full flow. I thought I would make use of the conditions and do a quick trip up to Trentham Falls, the highest single-drop waterfall in Victoria (32 metres). Luckily, it is only about 1 hour and 15 minutes from the Melbourne CBD so was an easy day trip.
I have to say, conditions this morning were amazing, and contrasted sharply with my visit to the falls last year, when there was barely a trickle. As soon as I got down from the car I heard the roar of the water and when I got to the lookout I was not let down.
I love the contrast of the spindly little tree against the thundering mass of the water. in the photo you can also see the basalt columns over which the waterfall flows.
After a 1 hour+ drive I decided I wasn’t satisfied with the view from the lookout and decided to wander down to the river, where you can really appreciate the power and size of the falls up close. It’s a bit of a muddy scramble to get down and care should be taken if you plan on attempting it.
Trentham Falls up closer.
Unfortunately I couldn’t get any closer due to the amount of spray that was being kicked up, but it was a spectacular sight to see and feel the roar of the water crashing down.
Another shot taken near Trentham Falls, facing downstream.
A shot taken downstream from the falls, showing the amount of water coming down from the falls. After a soggy morning taking waterfall photos, I decided to drive 5 minutes to nearby Trentham to check out the famous Redbard Bakery, which uses an old-school Scotch oven to bake their bread. Highly recommended breakfast and lunch stop if you’re in the area.
